The Experimental Mine is a unique facility acquired by the University of Queensland 's School of Mining Engineering in 1951. The site was home to an industry research project group established in 1962 and was concerned with the modelling and simulation of mineral grinding circuits, and which eventually became the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre. The JK Centre has expanded over the years to become the substantial Centre it is today, boasting a range of world-class facilities including a pilot plant, various laboratories, workshops, library and teaching spaces.

What is now an experimental mine used for educational purposes, was once an operating silver and lead mine early in the 20th century. Click here for a brief history of the mine written as a local school project.
