Joe graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei with MSc and BSc in Mineralogy and Geochemistry.

From 1979 to 1994, he worked at the USTC as a Research Assistant, Lecturer and then an Associate Professor in the fields of Crystallography, Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Metallogeny.

In early 1994 Joe moved to the University of Western Ontario in Canada where he worked as a Research Scientist in process mineralogy.

From 1995 to mid-2001, he worked for the Advanced Mineral Technology Laboratory (AMTEL) in London, Canada, as a Senior Mineralogist.

In mid-2001, he joined SGS Minerals (formerly Lakefield Research Limited) as a Senior Mineralogist and later was promoted to the position of Manager Mineralogy Group.  While working at SGS, he developed the methodology for quantitative gold and silver deportment study.

Joe joined JKTech in 2007 to manage the Mineralogy Consulting business and training courses.

In the past 28 years, Joe's research has been focused on the applied mineralogy of precious and base metal ores, and has completed several hundred projects for new deposits and operating mines around the world.

Joe is the author or co-author of numerous publications, and is the speaker at numerous international conferences and workshops.
