On graduating from the University of Queensland in 1985, John joined the Comalco Research Centre in Melbourne , where he worked in kaolin product development and alumina precipitation modelling.

He returned to the JKMRC in 1988, undertaking a PhD in gold CIP modelling.

In 1992, he joined the Hydrometallurgy Research Laboratories of MIM / Xstrata, where he gained significant experience in flowsheet development, project management, operational auditing and optimisation, and technical project review, in commodity areas including gold and silver, copper, zinc, nickel and lead. He is an inventor of the patented Albion Process, a novel hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of base metals and refractory gold from sulphide mineral ores.

He joined JKTech in late 2004, working in comminution and metallurgical accounting.
